Activated Goodness!

When we started looking at packaging for our beautiful pancake mixes, brownie mixes and muffin mixes we knew a few things.

1. We wanted them to be beautiful to look at – of course!
2. We wanted packaging that would keep the product fresh. We’re activating buckwheat and using a stone mill to grind it into flour so this element was crucial.
3. Lastly but equally as important, we also wanted our packaging to be earth friendly, meaning compostable or recyclable, and absolutely no plastic.

So began the journey to finding our perfect packaging which would be home to these nourishing and delicious products.

After a couple of weeks of searching, it became increasingly obvious that this wasn’t going to be the easiest of tasks. We found beautiful, we found airtight, but finding these two qualities plus earth friendly was a different matter.
Some claimed to be ‘eco’ but on looking further we found that eco means different things to different people. To some it meant it would eventually decompose into tiny fragments of plastic in the earth, and to others it was a simple case of “Whoops, how did that land in that eco category? Sorry about that.” Hmmm, it became a beautiful game in making sure to ask the right questions.

After a couple of months of searching to no avail, one afternoon I contacted one of Australia’s most well known organic food companies who are committed to sustainability. They create beautiful products in equally beautiful sustainable packaging.

After sharing that I was by no means a competitor since I was making very different products, I asked if they might be so generous as to share some details of their suppliers who created their packaging so I might further assist our collective commitment to looking after our earth. The response I received stated that it was their intellectual property and that they could unfortunately not share.

This got me thinking, what was Love Life & Gluten Free really about? I mean what were we standing for? Was it just about saying we were earth friendly because it would sell more packets of pancakes or was it more than that?

To create a world that is cared for it’s going to take more than just one business choosing to be sustainable. It’s going to take each and every single business taking this on and it became clear that this was the commitment.

So we want you know to know something: we finally found our beautiful packaging and we couldn’t be happier! We’re using Earth Bags which are 100% compostible. Yep, even in your home compost heap. They are lined with PLA (cornstarch) which means they can be heat sealed for freshness AND contain NO PLASTIC. And we’ll even tell you where you can buy them if you want because we know that it’s going to take more than our beautiful little company to make a difference. It’s going to take all of us.
